There has never been a better time to become skilled in the Health and Social Care sector.
The Health and Social Care (BSc) (Hons) has been developed in response to student demand for an appropriate progression route following successful completion of the Skills for the Workplace: Health and Social Care (CertHE).
Using the same flexible learning approach to programme location and delivery, this programme will facilitate student study into health and social care theory and practice, firmly contextualised within workplace experience.

Course Overview
Appropriate progression route following successful completion of the Skills for the Workplace: Health and Social Care (CertHE).
- To provide learners with an opportunity to study for an award explicitly focused towards future employability and career progression;
- Develop student knowledge, critical understanding, intellectual and practical skills relating to established principles and practice in health and social care;
- Prepare students for the workplace by developing their transferable skills and providing opportunities for work experience;
- Enable students to become independent and confident learners with a range of appropriate health and care based academic and transferable skills which may facilitate lifelong learning;
- Develop the ability to apply detailed knowledge and systematic understanding of the subject and service delivery needs in order to contribute to the enhancement, monitoring and analysis of the sector;
- Develop students’ intellectual skills to bachelor’s degree level, including critical evaluation, analysis, problem-solving and reflection;
- Prepare students for the workplace by building their transferable skills relating to, inter alia, communication, decision-making, research, interpretation, critical evaluation and their ability to turn theory into practice, including initiating and carrying out projects;
- Enhance students’ employability by preparing and entering them for a career or career development in the health and social care field by developing professional skills and providing the opportunity to apply them in vocationally relevant contexts;
- Prepare students for research or further study beyond level 6 in the field of health and social care.

Level 5
- Principles of Health and Care Practice
- Develop an understanding of the values, theories and policies underpinning health and social care practice and the mechanisms that exist to promote good practice.
- Creativity and Value Creation
- Develop the concepts and practice of creativity and value creation for the development of innovative, aspiring and progressive solutions.
- Children, Young People and Families
- Develop examination of social care services for children young people and families in the UK, covering historical and current major debates, perspectives and challenges associated with child care policy, provision and practice.
- Build Your Personal Brand for Sustainable Employment
- Build the skills and competencies necessary for career resilience and professional development for the future work context.
- Introduction to Physiology
- Provide a holistic overview of the structure and functioning of the human body as appropriate for those working in health and social care.
- Introduction to Research
- Develop skills of independent enquiry and crucial analysis by undertaking a sustained research project and investigate a topic with relevance to their professional development.
Level 6
- Mental Disorders and Psychopathology
- Critically examine the historical and current provision and classifications of mental disorders and mental ill-health.
- Living with Care: The Older Person
- Critically evaluate the historical, current and prospective future of health and wellbeing of the older adult.
- Health, Wellbeing and Sustainable Development
- Critically examine theories, policies and developments relating to Health, Wellbeing and Sustainable Development on a local, national and global level.
- Independent Project (Term 2)
- Develop skills of independent enquiry and critical analysis by undertaking a sustained research investigation of direct relevance to Health and Social Care / Health Management.
- Community Care and Development
- Develop an understanding of the role the community plays within health and social care values, service delivery, policy and practice.
- Independent Project (Term 3)
- Develop skills of independent enquiry and critical analysis by undertaking a sustained research investigation of direct relevance to Health and Social Care / Health Management.
Career and Progression
Graduates from the BSc in Health and Social Care will be able to pursue careers in the widest possible range of Health and Social Care areas.
